Review: Manhood Restored by Eric Mason

Every once in awhile when I browse the websites that I get review books from, I come across some that I think my husband will find interesting. His willingness to write the occasional review gives me a bit of time to catch up on a few other things. I can definitely appreciate this. But, it also allows me to put a few more books on my blog that would not otherwise show up. Being a woman, there isn’t too many reasons why I would pick up a book called Manhood Restored. So, for the men who do occasionally pass by my blog, I hope you can appreciate this one.

The earthly crisis within manhood will be there until Jesus returns, but in Christ men are pointed toward the gospel as the vision for renewal. Manhood Restored by exciting new pastoral voice Eric Mason combines theological depth with practical insights, putting men in step with a gospel-centered manhood that will enrich every facet of their lives. Mason begins with The Scope of Manhood — looking first at why God created man, at the divine differences between man and woman, and what should drive the purpose of a man during his time on earth. A section on The Problems in Manhood analyzes the false icons that lead to cultural caricatures of men — the businessman, the thug, the playboy, the athlete, etc. Mason then makes a connection to the cross-cultural fatherhood crisis, looking at the things men do to fill the void when their relationship with dad or God is not there. Finally, The Redemption of Manhood sets Jesus as the true standard of biblical manhood, looking to his perfect example to redeem and restore a man’s life in the areas of sexuality, home, and work.

Manhood Restored is a book about how to restore men’s lives to the plan God has for them.

I found Manhood Restored to be a fairly quick read. His appeals are laid out logically, with Scripture and statistics to support it. Manhood Restored discusses the way in which original sin and our current culture distract men from taking on their proper role.

Manhood Restored also focuses to a great extent on the role Jesus should play in men’s lives. Jesus is our perfect example and living for His kingdom should be a man’s central goal. This book pays particular attention on overcoming sexual temptation and dealing with growing up in a fatherless home.

If you’re looking for advice or direction in one specific area of a man’s life, this book probably won’t provide the depth required. However, Manhood Restored does provide a nice overview for the roles that men should play in the church and in the home.

I would love to hear from you! Who is the most godly man in your life?
