An Uncertain Choice by Jody Hedlund

There is something exciting about finding out one of your favorite author’s is going to try something new. In this case, it is Jody Hedlund, writing a YA novel, taking place in a medieval setting. Three of my favorite things collided in that idea. I love Hedlund’s books and am always so excited to hear about any of her new ones that come out. But this series, I was especially excited to start.

**I received a copy of this book from BookLook Bloggers in exchange for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.**

Due to her parents’ promise at her birth, Lady Rosemarie has been prepared to become a nun on the day she turns eighteen. Then, a month before her birthday, a friend of her father’s enters the kingdom and proclaims her parents’ will left a second choice–if Rosemarie can marry before the eve of her eighteenth year, she will be exempt from the ancient vow.

Before long, Rosemarie is presented with the three most handsome and brave knights in the land. But when the competition for her heart seemingly results in a knight playing foul, she begins to wonder if the convent is the best place after all. If only one of the knights–the one who appears the most guilty–had not already captured her heart.

“We show courage in many ways.”

-Sir Derrick Harding, An Uncertain Choice

Characters: From the beginning of this book I loved Lady Rosemarie and adored the three chivalrous knights. Each had a distinct personality all their own, and all were fun to get to know. Rosemarie is by far the most developed character in this book, and she is everything a medieval heroine could and should be. She had a beautiful personality and kindness about her that won her the respect of the villagers she is supposed to lead. Each of the knights were honorable and acted in ways that fit their position.

Storyline: The overarching story of this book was quite fun. Three men vying for one woman’s heart. There was some wonderful friendly rivalry between the three knights. There was also something darker going on behind the scenes that also really raised the tension in this story and pushed it forward. I found it quite difficult to put this book down.

My Thoughts:  One of the first things that astonished me with this novel, was that due to a previous event in the novel, Rosemarie nearly had her heart set on one of the three knights. The problem was, she didn’t know which one, and as the reader, I didn’t know which one. Even when the narration switches to this particular knight, there is nothing that gives him away. This was such a unique facet of this book and I adored it!

This novel had all of the chivalry one could hope for to rescue the damsel who is caught in a promise made by her parents. Plus, just the right amount of intrigue was thrown in. I loved this book and can’t wait for the next one in the series.

About the Author:

Jody Hedlund is an award-winning and bestselling author of inspirational historical romances for both adults and teens.

As a busy mama-writer, she has the wonderful privilege of teaching her crew of 5 children at home. In between grading math papers and giving spelling tests, she occasionally does a load of laundry and washes dishes. When she’s not busy being a mama, you can find her in front of her laptop working on another of her page-turning stories.

She loves reading almost as much as she loves writing, especially when it also involves chocolate and coffee.
