Devastation sweeps across the land, and the families of Maple Grove cannot escape when war arrives at their front doors. After her father entrusts her with a new and dangerous task, Sally Chandler must find the courage to obey despite her fear. Meanwhile, her best friend, Claire Harper, is determined to serve others, even if it means putting herself in danger. But with a certain handsome Union soldier stationed nearby, Claire finds her heart in danger of falling for the enemy. Their differing loyalties create complications that neither could expect; her twin brother fighting for the Confederacy is only one of them. Frank Harper left home with one goal in mind – to become a prosperous plantation owner. Two years later, not only is he further from his goal, but he’s beginning to question his own desires–something that becomes more complicated when his heart becomes involved. The families of Maple Grove must learn how to survive the uncertainty of war and a country split in two. While the war in the nation rages on, the battle within grows stronger. Will they learn that the only safe place to hide is in the shadow of Thy Wings?

**I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.**

In The Shadow of Thy Wings is filled with many of the characters that we first met in Heath’s debut novel Where Can I Flee? Claire, Frank, Sally, Ralph and of course Olen all have strong roles in this novel. Each character experiences changes in their lives whether it be with faith, love, life in general, or brought on by the war. The characters are complex and leap off the page.

This book follows the characters to the completion of the war and the joys and trials that they each see. I loved experiencing this bit of Civil War history alongside of these characters. Some bits are told through the story of the characters and other moments come through in the letters that they write to one another. So if you enjoy stories told through written letters, this is probably a series you would be interested in.

One of the most obvious ways that this novel shines is in the history presented through it’s pages. Being a Civil War novel, we definitely see the progression of the war. But there is also some history in the pages that I was never aware of. The Underground Railroad operated in some states even after the Emancipation Proclamation. One of the main characters of this story finds herself immersed in this. But beyond that, In The Shadow of Thy Wings does a wonderful job of capturing the everyday life in Tennessee while the war is being waged all around. A.M. Heath laces Biblical truths throughout the pages creating a story that feeds the soul while offering a wonderful tale to read.

“There is nothing courageous about doing something you were never afraid of.”

About the Author:

Where one may think her talents lie with baking and cake decorating, A.M. Heath breaks out as a Christian romance novelist with the 2014 release of Where Can I Flee. Inspired by her love of Christ and 19th century American history, A.M. Heath has created a setting that allows readers to empathize with the character’s conflicts they face during a four year war.

Being raised in a small Tennessee town, A.M. Heath grew up with a love for southern history and nostalgia. Her husband and 4 children embrace the small town lifestyle and southern standard of back porch relaxing, tea sipping, homemade comfort food, strong Christian values, and tightly woven family bonds. For many years, she has nurtured a desire to write but chose to nurture her own family until the time was right. How do you know when the time is right? You just do! With lots of prayer and support, she began to put pen to paper and explored her passion for writing.

Inspiration can strike at any moment and spawn from a simple garden stroll, a biblical passage, one of her kid’s school projects, a recipe, or a phone call from a friend. This unbridled inspiration makes A.M. Heath’s stories, characters, and settings unique and fresh; an assurance for her loyal readers as new stories are projected to release in the future.

  1. What a beautifully written review! Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us. I, too, was surprised to know about the Underground Railroad functioning after the Emancipation Declaration.
