Review and Giveaway: The Fruitcake Challenge by Carrie Fancett Pagels

I know it is still October, but the Christmas stories are making their way to the shelves. I reviewed a WWII Christmas novella collection in September, so I felt I need to do some more this month, since Christmas will be here before we know it, and the Christmas stories are showing up on the shelves.

You can also expect a few more Christmas stories to start popping up on my blog, as I have a few more planned. I love this time of year, so my reading needs to reflect that 🙂

Don’t forget to check out the bottom of this post to find out how you can win a copy of this wonderful Christmas novella.

The Fruitcake Challenge by Carrie Fancett Pagels

When new lumberjack, Tom Jeffries, tells the camp cook, Jo Christy, that he’ll marry her if she can make a fruitcake, “as good as the one my mother makes,” she rises to the occasion. After all, he’s the handsomest, smartest, and strongest axman her camp-boss father has ever had in his camp—and the cockiest. And she intends to bring this lumberjack down a notch or three by refusing his proposal. The fruitcake wars are on!

**I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for my honest review**

I found this novella to be a fun read. It is light-hearted and captures the hope of Christmas. The storyline is creative and there were a number of surprises in the story.

I love Michigan history, and this novella gave me a steady dose of it. It’s lumber camp setting is interesting and offers a variety of wonderful characters throughout its pages. This story is one that will cheer your heart and help you anticipate your own favorite parts of Christmas traditions, especially if you enjoy fruitcake.

I would love to hear from you! What Christmas things (food, traditions, etc.) do you look forward to?

  1. This sounds like a lovely read… “captures the hope of Christmas”… could use some of that about now! Thank you for the review and for the chance to win! I always most look forward to time with my immediate family for Christmas… all of us snuggled in the house for the day, spending time together! I know those days are fewer as the kids are getting older.

  2. Yay! Another wonderful Christmas read to look forward to! I love all things related to the Christmas season: food, family gatherings, music, movies, and LIGHTS and TREES! I love to relax with a book at the end of a long day in front of a lit tree. 🙂 That’s my private tradition. a.m.heath(at)hotmail(dot)come

    1. With my RA and chronic pain I’m afraid I get pretty stressed out about Christmas. So I try to focus on Christ and His birth and try not to get pulled into wanting to do it all. But I love Christmas–especially if someone else is doing all that!!!

  3. I just love Christmas. The mood, the movies, the decorations, the food. This looks like a great book. I love books about Christmas, too.

There are so many things I look forward to at Christmas – one is baking Christmas goodies (cookies, etc.), although I almost every attempt fruitcake.

  5. It was a fun read, wasn’t it? I enjoyed it as well. We are getting a good dose of Michigan between Carrie and Jody Hedlund.
